The Big Self Publishing Blunder That Many Ebook Authors Make

So, you've researched your market and found a problem they have. Then you've written an ebook that solves the problem. You've spent ages marketing your ebook but sales are low or non-existent.

What happened?

Why aren't you making sales?

Because you've made the big self publishing blunder that many people have made.

You've written for a market that doesn't buy ebooks.

It can be all too easy to go online and read about people moaning and groaning about one topic or another. And it might be easy to think that if you write an ebook that has information to solve their problem, that viola! You have a huge market of people eager to buy your ebook.

But it's not necessarily the case.

You didn't do your research thoroughly enough.

You didn't check to see if these types of people actually buy ebooks. And the way to check that is to see if any other ebooks have been written on the subject AND if they're making sales.

So what types of people wouldn't buy ebooks?

Well for a start how about broke pensioners. Most of them don't even use computers so would never even see your ebook or read your sales page.

Other pensioners may be a bit more computer savvy, but they may only use free computers at the library and are too broke to buy an ebook.

Likewise a fitness freak who's totally focused on training and staying fit, may listen to any amount of advice from their personal trainer or talk things through online with other die-hard fitness fanatics, but they'd never listen to advice from an ebook author.

Online gamers are another good example. They're all over the internet on forums and blogs talking about the latest games and how to play/cheat. But they rarely, if ever, buy an ebook. They're just online to find free tid bits of information. They're not looking for a whole ebook (unless it comes with a free game). ☺

So before you go dashing off to your computer (although to be fair, you're probably already there if you're reading this online) to compose your latest ebook masterpiece, make sure that not only does your target audience exist, but they have the money AND the interest to buy your ebook.

If you really want to make a success of your next ebook, make sure you have a market to write to, and not just any market. It has to be a market of hungry buyers. These are people who are already searching for an ebook like yours because it solves a problem they have - a problem they are desperate to solve. These are called Desperate buyers. You don't need to market to desperate buyers because they're already looking for your ebook.
